Wolfsonian Arts District Rules Change Clears Final Vote, 7–0
Multi-story rooftop additions and no parking requirement for museums, a fix tied to the museum's bond-funded expansion.

The Wolfsonian is one step closer to growing up. On Wednesday the Commission approved on second reading, 7–0, a code change for the Wolfsonian Arts District that lets certain existing buildings add multi-story rooftop additions and drops the parking requirement for museums and galleries in the district.
Project facts. Item R5 E amends the Resiliency Code's parking (Sec. 5.2.4.1) and rooftop-addition (Sec. 7.5.2.1) rules for the Wolfsonian Arts District, a CD-2 overlay on Washington Avenue. Today, buildings there can add only a single habitable rooftop story; the change allows more than one, as long as they stay under the maximum building height. Museums and galleries would have no parking minimum, but loading-space rules stay. The request came on behalf of the museum, a nonprofit that owns the property, and the city waived the application fees. Per the staff memo, the 2022 cultural bond set aside $10 million for an expansion at the museum's Washington Avenue location, which is still going through land-use board review.
What was discussed. Not much. No one spoke at the public hearing, and the item passed without debate. The Planning Board had recommended it 7–0 on Sept. 8, and the Commission approved it on first reading on Sept. 10.
What's next. The ordinance is adopted. The expansion itself still needs land-use board approvals; we'll post those hearings as they're scheduled.
