The Downtown Development Authority pays the police department about $2 million a year, $500,000 for equipment and $1.5 million for overtime, and about $600,000 went unused, the Commission heard in a discussion on downtown policing. A $3 million federal grant for foot and bike patrols also drew questions about whether its terms are being met.

Traffic unit. Earlier, the Commission unanimously approved RE 6, a citywide push for a police traffic control unit to target problem intersections. Its sponsor said the DDA writes 'a very large check' to the department and wants more transparency on what it covers. The DDA, the Flagler BID and a Brickell homeowners group backed it in public comment.

What's next. The police chief will work with each district office on problem intersections.

Reported from the Sept. 24, 2026 City of Miami Commission meeting.
