Miami International Airport is moving to end its deal with the developer of a planned on-airport hotel. The developer said the project no longer works on the site after the FAA found that the 150-foot design would create a three-degree radar blind spot, airport staff told the County Commission.

How it got here. Staff said the FAA flagged the blind spot in August 2024. The airport then proposed using radar feeds from Fort Lauderdale and Homestead, which the FAA rejected, and asked the developer to redesign the hotel lower. The RFP said any design was subject to FAA approval. Staff said the termination may involve some costs to the county tied to the redesign.

What's next. Commissioners pressed on why it took about three years and on timelines for a new solicitation. Staff said a new RFP could follow once revised design requirements are set, and noted construction elsewhere at the airport from mid-2028 through 2031 limits staging space. The board passed a motion seeking a report and a broader plan, including proposals already submitted.

Reported from the Oct. 6, 2026 Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners meeting.
