County Raises Metrobus and Metrorail Fares to $2.75

Metrobus and Metrorail fares will rise from $2.25 to $2.75 after the County Commission voted 9–4 for the 50-cent increase following more than an hour of debate. Fares now cover about 11% of the cost of each ride, the sponsor said, with the general fund paying the rest.
Why. Speakers cited a $19.1 million transit deficit that threatens late-night service and 12 bus routes. Staff had estimated about $10 million a year in new revenue. Students, workers and advocates opposed the jump, calling a 22% increase in one step too much at once, and asked for better outreach and easier enrollment in free and reduced fares.
What came with it. The approved amendments direct the administration to draft a Metromover fare that covers the cost of a fare system plus $1, require development in Metromover rapid-transit zones to contribute to mover maintenance, and report on advertising, parking and park-and-ride revenue. They also call for an audit of routes cut over the last five years. Staff said some cut routes, such as Route 279, would be reinstated. A separate motion created a one-year, up to $100,000 District 8 pilot to reimburse the 50 cents for low-income riders, and other districts asked to join.
